What’s up with your skin? (4)

I am sweating again as the weather is climbing to 70*F by mid-week…  And there is a good reason for my sweating.  Did you know that beneath your hair follicles there are multitudes of systems throbbing with life?  One square inch may hold 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, and more than one thousand nerve endings?

On the top layer, or epidermis, a sheet of dead cells forms a horny shield of keratin. Many microorganisms perish on contact with this surface, which is bathed in salty sweat and acidic , oily sebum.  Other microbial invaders fall away as surface cells dry up and flake off.  The shed skin is replenished by a living layer of basal cells that divide and move to the surface.
