Growth involves either an increase in size of existing cells or the creation of new ones by cell division. Both processes are at work throughout life, but one tends to dominate at any given stage of development.
Growth is not a simple story of cells getting bigger and bigger. They cannot. There is a physical limit to their size. Many cells are ball shaped. As cells enlarges, its volume increases at a rate greater than its surface area.
