The pituitary and hypothalamus are connected by a special set of blood vessels and carries messages from one to the other with intricate nerves.

The innate intelligence of the body uses the hypothalamus to release chemicals which tumble half an inch to the pituitary and tell it to secrete hormones.  When hormones from other glands reach high levels in the bloodstream, they send a message to the hypothalamus to stop releasing chemicals.  This in turn slows the release of hormones from the pituitary.
