Why afferent & efferent are so important?

Let’s suppose you just place your foot into the tub of water, and uh-0h, the water is scalding.  The afferent nerves are sending mental impulses to the brain telling it the water is too hot.

Even before you have the chance to say “OUTCH“, your brain has created another mental image, transformed it into energy, and sent a message by way of efferent nerves, once again allowing your foot to be pulled rapidly out of the hot water.
