In 70 years,  your stomach will produce about 60,000 quarts of digestive juice…  It will digest about 40 tons of food!  You can help your stomach to do its work efficiently by eating properly and making sure the nerve supply to your stomach is free from vertebral subluxations.

Your stomach can hold a little over a quart of food, although this capacity varies among different people.  Primitive people we able to gorge themselves with enormous amounts of food because they were never sure when they’d eat again.  But don’t try it… you might be mighty uncomfortable.

Every day your stomach produces as much as 2 1/2 quarts of gastric juices to facilitate digestion.  You digest a meal in one to seven hours, depending on what and how much you eat.  When your stomach is empty, its muscles contract rhythmically.  These are “hunger pangs” you feel.  When it’s full, it contracts strongly three times per minute.  This helps break up the food and push it toward a valve at the lower end of your stomach called the pylorus.

The cells in your stomach‘s lining produce millions of tough, tiny flakes of mucus that line its inside walls just like shingles cover the roof of a house.  This lining is replaced every five days due to the powerful acid, along with two other chemicals, pepsin and rennin which are necessary to help break down the food you eat into a consistency that your intestine can digest.

What is food?

Food is any substance ingested into the body, which when digested and otherwise prepared furnishes wholesome nutrition to the tissue cell.  There are necessary elements that are demanded by the innate intelligence of the body and made known consciously by normal hunger, thirst and desire.  Given the demanded materials, the innate intelligence of the body will make any combination desired for metabolism.  Given the wrong materials, the innate intelligence of the body will reject them or if they are unsatisfactory, and not poison, the innate intelligence of the body will make the  best of the circumstances.
