WHAT are the secrets of the human cell? (4)

Each and everyone of the 25-40,000,000,000,000,000 cells of your body functions like a walled city.  Power plants generate the cell’s energy.  Factories produce proteins, vital units of  chemical commerce.  Complex transportation systems guide specific chemicals from point to point within the cell and beyond.

Sentries at the barricades control the export and import markets, and monitor the outside world for signs of danger.  Disciplined biological armies stand ready to grapple with invaders.

A centralized genetic government maintains order.  An innate intelligence directs some trillion operations moment by moment, every moment.

Domino effect of hormones (3)

Two different mechanisms relay the information brought by the hormone to the target cell.  Some hormones enter the cell and bind to a receptor-protein in the cytoplasm, the gelatin-like substance encasing the nucleus.  Together, the hormone and receptor move to the nucleus, bind to the chromosome, and cause the cell to synthesize certain proteins.

Other hormones do not enter the cell at all.  They bind to receptor-proteins on the cell’s surface and trigger the release of a second messenger in the cytoplasm.  It is this compound that the initiates the cell’s response to the hormones.

River of life (2)

The body’s river retains an age-old tie to Earth‘s waters.  Like it’s prototype the ocean, blood is a crowded sea, teeming with a diverse society of cells that carry out specific tasks and coexist in strict proportions.  So critical is this balance that a decline in the population of any one element can endanger life.

The red blood cells constitute about 45% of blood’s volume.  EVERY red blood cell contains about 270,000,000 complex proteins to carry oxygen to our body parts.  In turn, so many red cells crowd the bloodstream of a single human that stacked, these cells could reach 31,000 miles in the sky.
